first trip to vegas
Well this weekend my mom took me to Vegas for my 21st birthday and it was an interesting trip. We left Saturday mourning and got there around 4:00 and the first thing we did was go up to the horseshoe to pay respects. It wasn’t what i was expecting, a little disappointing. The wall of champions was kind of back in a corner and the place was pretty old. it was still interesting getting the see the place. We then headed back to the hotel to check in. We were staying at the Venetian. it was a really nice room and the price wasn’t too bad.
after we got settled we headed over to bellagio for dinner at olives. it was very expensive but the food was very good. after the appetizers i headed over the poker room to check out the list. i had never seen the bellagios poker room before and it was very nice. Much smaller then i expected though. it had about 25-30 tables all full, with 4-8 limit up and high rollers in the back with 4000-8000. And who was the first pro that i saw, the man, phil ivey, i was kinda star struck at first. It was really cool to see someone that i respect very much and not to mention he is one of my favorite poker players.
So after the quick glance i headed back over to olives to finish dinner. i was so excited i couldnt think about anything else but playing poker the rest of dinner. So i finished up told my mom i was going to play and i headed over.
the list had grown since i had left so i had to wait about an hour for a 4-8 hold em table. once i got my seat and the 7 spot, i took a look around and i knew this was gonna be a good night as long as the cards cooperated. after about 20 hands with nothing playable i look down the table and gus hanson is standing right there. i wasnt expecting this at all so i probably stared at him for longer then i should have. the reason he was standing there was because his sister was playing at my table. he was much taller and broader then i expected, he stayed around for a few hands then headed back up to the 4000-8000 game. and by this time johnny chan, chip reese, and chau had showed up for the big game, it was really cool to see
Back to the action, i really didnt get any decent hands all night until about 6 hours in i picked up Q10 in middle position, two callers in front of me, i call, 2 caller behind, small blind raises, we all call. Flop comes J98, two spades. Fireworks started going off in my head. Small blind bet under the gun calls, i raise, two people behind me call so does small and utg. Turn come 3d, checked to me, i bet, guy behind be raises, i get 2 callers behind him, i reraise, everyone calls, one guy is all in. 5 handed going to the river. At this point i was just praying for no spade and not to pair the board. But the 4 of spades fell and i had to check it, it got checked around and my hand was good. Pot was about $200 and i had finally made a big score, this put me up by about $150 for the night and after a few decent hands didnt hit i decided to call it a night up about $130.
I felt really good about my play that night, i had played a little tight but i really didnt catch cards so i was happy with what i did.
Sunday was not so good to me, infact its the worst day of poker i have ever had in my life. I started out at the Mirage at 2:00 at 3-6 holdem. Went up about $20 and then couldnt win a hand to save my life. Ice cold cards, nothing i could do, 4 hours later i left down only $60 which wasnt that bad considering my cards. worst hand was JJ, flop came J98, guy had Q10, i didnt improve, that one hurt
I decided to go back to the hotel and regroup then head back to bellagio for another night of cards. bad decision number 1. When i got there i saw doyle and ivey which was the highlight of the night.
Once i got my seat first hand K8, flop KQ3, just me and the small blind, he checks, i bet, he calls, turn is a 5, he checks i bet he calls, river is 3, he checks, i check, he flips over 55, thanks asshole, that hand hurt but i wasnt too mad, wasnt a big pot or anything. a round later i pick up AA for the first time all weekend, i raise it up in 4 position, one caller. Flop 1074, i bet she calls, turn is 10, i check like a bitch, she checks, river is meaningless 9, i bet she raises, wtf?? what just happened, she turns over 99, now ive been good about controlling my mood lately but this just set me off, i could believe i lost to 99 and 55 like that within a half hour.
Nothing went right for me the whole night. i had A10, board comes 10458J, guy turns over J3, my last hand i had A8 clubs, flop comes 7cKc8s, great flop for me right?, turn is 7 river is A, guy turns over KK, i know this wasnt a bad beat, its just a really unlucky situation. I didnt win one hand at bellagio and i was stuck $150 in one hour. the worst part was the guy with KK completely slow rolled me. that really sent me over the edge and i was PISSED. i stormed out of the poker room and just steamed back to the hotel.
Well my mom came back to the room and calmed me down and after an hour and half i decided i didnt call all this way to sit in my hotel so i went back out to the mirage. back decision number 2. I get over there and loose $60 before my drink even gets to the table. I decided i need to slow down so i take a seat at 1-5 Stud, i had never played stud before live but it was fun, i played for 3 hours and only lost about $10, then decided to take another shot at hold em and sat down with the $27 in chips i had, in the first 15 hands i go up huge and i have about $150 in chips, i feel just great i finally got a rush and if i leave know ill be even for the trip, Oh no i didnt make that decision, my dumbass just keep playing and my cards went dead again and i lost it all and another $30 when i tried to my another comeback, i so tired at this point i just want to go to sleep. And what time is it do you ask, 8:15 in the mourning. I had been playing poker for 10 hours. I didnt even realize that it was so late and that just added more salt to the wound cause i had to be up at 10:30 to go home.
But i did learn alot on this trip. the cards can be brutal but you just have to play your game, and dont drink while you play because you loose track of time. my play didnt suffer too much but it did take some of my edge away. In the end it is only money but it still hurts when you play the right way and still loose. Ill be back to vegas though and this time ill be more prepared for the competition.
